The King James Version (KJV), also known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible that was commissioned by the Church of England in 1604 and completed in 1611. This translation was approved by the English Church authorities and was the third official English translation of the Bible. Preceding versions include the Great Bible and the Bishops' Bible.
In response to perceived issues with earlier translations, King James I convened the Hampton Court Conference in January 1604 to initiate a new English version of the Bible. The translators were given specific instructions by James to ensure that the new version adhered to the ecclesiology and reflected the episcopal structure of the Church of England, as well as the belief in an ordained clergy. The translation process involved 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England.
Similar to other translations during that time, the New Testament was translated from Greek while the Old Testament was translated from Hebrew text. The Apocrypha, on the other hand, were translated from Greek and Latin.
As a result of its wide acceptance, the Authorized Version became the standard English translation used in Anglican and Protestant churches by the first half of the 18th century. This version gradually replaced the Latin Vulgate as the preferred scripture for English-speaking scholars. The edition most commonly used today, known as the plain King James Version, particularly in the United States, closely follows the standard text edited by Benjamin Blayney at Oxford in 1769. Notably, this edition became authorized by Act of Parliament and subsequently featured in the Book of Common Prayer (1662) for Epistle and Gospel readings.
